My Story

I’m Dr. Meredith Beckford-Smart, the visionary behind Explore With Ollie, a vibrant world of adventure, curiosity, and learning designed to inspire young minds. As a biologist by training, science educator, children's book author, and lifelong advocate for meaningful learning experiences, I’ve dedicated my career to empowering young learners through storytelling, science, and creativity.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, I am a first-generation college graduate who knows firsthand the power of education and exploration. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Long Island University, a Master’s in Teaching and Learning Biology (7–12) from New York University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Science Education and Supervision from Columbia University. With this strong foundation in science and education and over two decades of training and mentoring teachers, designing curricula and programs, and not-for-profit executive leadership, I have supported hundreds of teachers and students in discovering the joy of learning. My journey has taken me from teaching in NYC public schools to leading several nonprofit organizations, always with a love for nurturing curiosity and imagination. Explore With Ollie is an extension of that passion. Through engaging picture books, interactive learning experiences, and creative storytelling, this platform encourages young people to dream big, ask questions, and embark on their own journeys of discovery.

The Ollie’s Book Series brings these adventures to life, beginning with Ollie’s Big Dream: A Journey to the Stars, where Ollie’s fascination with space takes on new meaning after an inspiring visit from a real NASA scientist. Motivated by her incredible stories of exploration, Ollie sets his sights on becoming an astronaut. With determination in his heart and curiosity leading the way, he dives into learning—building rocket models, studying the night sky with his telescope, and discovering that big dreams require hard work, persistence, and a never-ending sense of wonder. Through his journey, young readers are encouraged to embrace their passions, ask questions, and reach for the stars—both literally and figuratively.
